Bohemian Sunset Maternity Session
If you ask me (and my husband), women look most beautiful when pregnant. That glow is no joke. A few weeks ago, Rylee and I made some bohemian maternity sunset magic to capture her third and final pregnancy. We met at her parents’ amazing custom home (that they built themselves!) with Front Range views to die for right outside of Fort Collins. The summer storms had arrived, and so we knew we’d have to act fast if we wanted to take advantage of the setting sun. Rylee had originally contacted me about her newborn shoot and after we emailed back and forth, I realized she was the exactly the kind of maternity model I had been searching for to model a boho style lace dress for me: pregnant (duh), tattooed, and comfortable with showing a little skin. It doesn’t hurt that she’s also absolutely beautiful and amazingly kind and flexible. (On a side note, this dress is just one of a number I’ve collected for my clients to borrow for their sessions. Purchasing for my client closet has become a bit of an indulgence for me lately.)
Backtrack a few months ago when I moved to Colorado, I decided to take some time to figure out what really speaks to me as a photographer. I realized that I am most drawn to motherhood and would like to focus my future portrait work mostly on maternity, newborn, and fun family shoots. I also love working with people who have a funky style, lots of tattoos, and are game for doing weird stuff. (Although to be honest, I love 99% of all my clients no matter what kind of style they have. I’m just lucky enough to have worked with super nice people so far.) Anyway, when I heard from Rylee and she sent me pics of her burgeoning baby bump, I knew I had found my gal!
As luck would have it, the sun came out, the rain clouds stayed away, and Rylee absolutely glowed. Since I like to keep my photo sessions low key with little posing, we just casually wandered from a field to a small grove of trees and finally to the deck that her husband had welded together himself, and I gave Rylee some simply posing suggestions that she ran with. At the end of the shoot, I asked Rylee’s mom (who had been so kindly serving as my assistant throughout the entire session) to hop in and get a few pics with her daughter and future grand daughter, and she graciously obliged. I’m so happy with what we created.
If you are on the fence about taking maternity photos, I say without any hesitation to DO IT! You will never regret getting them taken, but it’s very possible you WILL regret not getting them taken.
