There are a few events in your life as significant as your pregnancy. The transition into motherhood is exciting, scary, and undeniably beautiful (in my humble opinion). As such, it’s probably the most popular life experience to document after your wedding. And if your kids are anything like mine, they will cherish this images of them inside mommy’s belly. As a photographer who specializes in maternity shoots, I felt like it might be worth it to share some tips for planning your own shoot with me. Here are my top tips for having the best maternity session possible.

1. I highly recommend that you plan on scheduling your shoot with me as soon as possible. I feel lucky that I essentially book out all year long, so the sooner you get in touch with me the better your chances of getting a date that works best for your bump!

When is the best time to schedule your session? I try to aim for between 31 to 34 weeks so that you are still relatively comfortable, and if we experience typical crazy Colorado weather, we still have the ability to reschedule before you are so uncomfortable that you don’t even want to do it.

2. Use my Pinterest styles boards, client closet, and styling service to coordinate your outfits with me ahead of time. My styling service also lets you include your family members so you can literally curate everyone’s outfits within one color palette that you can send to me ahead of time to ensure it works with wherever you are planning on displaying your images in your home

3. That brings me to your home. Over the years, I’ve realized I’m not doing anyone any favors but just handing off digital files and wishing you luck. As I refine my business, I realize that I am much more interested in creating a boutique experience for my clients than a machine that churns out digital files. I want to Facetime with you so I can see your house and where you think you might want to hang your art. Knowing that, we can really hone in on what color palette and location will complement your space, as well as choose products that will be worth passing down to future generations.

4. Consider getting your hair, makeup, and nails done for your session. Besides the fact that they will only make your photos look that much better, you absolutely deserve an opportunity to pamper yourself. Pregnancy is tough and takes a lot out of us gals- use your photo session as a chance to prioritize yourself.

5. Create a playlist to listen to while we shoot! One of my most common compliments from clients is that I make sessions fun, light, and easy, but if you’re anything like me, listening to good tunes helps me to relax and get into whatever I’m doing WAY more than silence.

Once clients book with me, I take the time to ensure we have the right location and the right look, which includes a styling consultation. My goal is not only to create images that you love, but to create an experience that you will remember as a highlight of your pregnancy.
