I found Jessica MacMaster on Instagram (where I do all my best stalking- muahahahah), and was struck by her beautiful macrame designs. We met for lunch at The Farmhouse at Jessup Farm, where we proceeded to chat about life in Colorado, connecting with female creatives, and our kiddos, and I housed an amazing burger.

We made subsequent plans to meet up at Wolverine Farm in Fort Collins, where she attends and hosts crafts events, and I got to photograph her in action. We also enjoyed a mid day beer, cause duh, this is Colorado. Read on to learn more about Jess of JMacMade!

Who are you and what do you do?

My name is Jess and I'm a mom, primarily. But, by night, I am an actor and improv comedian with the Comedy Brewers - Fort Collins Improv. Whenever I can, I'm a maker. I make anything- whatever there's a need for in my life but these days, I've been super into macrame and weavings.

Why do you do what you do?

My, that is the ultimate question, isn't it. Now you have me introspectively looking for my reflection in a glass of wine pondering the meaning of my life. I don't know! Whatever feels right is what I slide into, I guess. I want to make things and explore and create meaningful relationships.

How do you work?

Usually alone, in 10-minute bursts before the next distraction!

What is the best part and what is the worst part about what you do.

The best part is the freeing aspect of creating something with little to no plan. I love to get some inspiration from either something I need or colors/a space from a client and just...go. The worst thing, for me, is the business management side. Making sure everything is in order, and that I don't miss anything. Creators, by nature, are typically a little less organized, I think. The proof is in the messy home-studio!

Describe a real-life situation that inspired you.

I was pregnant with my first baby and I wanted a mobile for above her crib. I was super turned off by all the plastic, typical mobiles you find everywhere so I grabbed some fake flowers and my wood burner and created my own version of a mobile.

What superpower would you have and why?

Hmmm... multitasking? Nah, that's a mom-power. Reading peoples' wants and desires and adjusting my attitude accordingly? Superpower or curse? Not sure.

Name something you love and why you love it.

My dog. She's always right by my side when I'm working. So I guess I never really do work alone.

What is your dream project?

I'm not sure it's been envisioned yet! It will absolutely come out of a need for an item that either I or a friend has. My favorite creation, lately, is a macrame swing for my nephew's first birthday. What kid doesn't need a swing?!

What song inspires you right now?

Just Breathe by Pearl Jam.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given?

These are thinkers! It's that think that all successful people preach. You almost don't hear it anymore because it's so common but that's probably because it's so spot-on. "Just do what you love and everything else will fall into place." Every time I stop making space for the 'things I have to do' and replace them with the 'things that will make me happy,' life is just...better.
