Old Town Family Maternity Session | Fort Collins, Colorado | Sunshine Lady Photography

an Old Town Photography Session featuring The Hunter Family

Let’s be honest, we live in a beautiful place. The Front Range is full of mountains, rivers, fields, and almost everything in between. But, as much as I love photographing my clients out in the beauty of Northern Colorado (and Northern California! Hoping to do more of those in early winter, btw), sometimes I crave something a little different from the norm. I live in Fort Collins (which I realize a lot of my clients don’t realize), and one thing I can say for sure is that we have the cutest downtown area. Old Town is full of murals and I love to snap pics of my own kids wandering around the alleys and posing in front of so much beautiful art work. I decided that if I love photographing MY OWN kids that much in Old Town, why not photograph my clients as well? Risa, who I’ve photographed before with the amazing Golden Poppy Herbal Apothecary gals, was game for a family maternity session around Old Town, and I am absolutely IN LOVE with our pics. Since this session was such a success, I thought I’d list some reasons why Old Town (or any other urban scape) might be the right kind of photo session location for YOU!

There are endless possibilities for unique and interesting backdrops in a town or city setting.

I know, we have some iconic natural backdrops around here, BUT the only thing that changes in them is the vegetation. In a town or city, you have so many options for interesting backdrops, from the architecture to parks to landmarks to murals and interesting little vignettes hidden in alley ways. The variety keeps things interesting for both you and me!

Urban scapes can be used to create both formal and casual portraits.

Not everyone wants to go out and buy a new wardrobe they’ll never wear again for photos. Why not go a little more casual and wear what you have? Urban backdrops create so much interest that the client doesn’t have to wear anything extremely formal or impressive to give the images visual interest.

The hustle and bustle of a city can add excitement to your photos.

Cars whizzing by, crowds blurring past, lights and pops of color! The energy in an urbanscape creates such fun contrast with still subjects. If there’s one thing I LOVE, it’s contradictions.

Kids cooperate better when they’re having fun.

Urban scapes are fun because there’s something unexpected around every corner. The people, the cars, the lights, the colors, the sounds- all of it will distract kids from getting bored and allow for more engaging photo opportunies.
