Film Photography Endeavors| Sunshine Lady Photography

When I was a child, I received my first camera from my grandfather. It was a purple Vivitar, which took 120 film, and I took it pretty much everywhere I went. As I grew up, I made sure I brought that or disposable camera with me to every event I attended, like summer vacations, camp, sleepovers, etc. In high school, I was thrilled to take Photography One, and had to borrow an SLR from my boyfriend/friend's mother in order to participate in the class. We shot in black-and-white film and learned how to develop it in the dark room. In general, I was pretty terrible.

In college, film photography education continued with my focus on photography and ceramics my art Minor again, it was shooting film and developing in the dark room. Despite all these years, shooting film photography, I never really learned how to shoot film. It was clear that developing film was the priority over learning the ins and outs of film and film photography.

Once digital cameras became ubiquitous, I took less and less film photos. Luckily, I didn’t entirely erase it from my photography practices, and I enjoy viewing my film photos from backpacking Europe, studying abroad in Australia, and traveling around New Zealand and Central America.

Me looking a little grouchy with my film camera in Venice, Italy.

Over the past seven years, I have been aggressively refining my digital photography and editing skills. And while I love, digital photography, the ability to take endless photos until you get the right one kind of takes away some of the magic of Photography ( not to mention greatly increasing the amount of time it takes to call and edit photos after a photo shoot)

Over the past year, I have been in a kind of brainstorm mode about who I am as an artist and what I wanna create. I recently bought a medium format camera, a type of photography with which I am completely unfamiliar. I’ve also started picking up my film cameras again, and seeing how I can be creative in this medium.

I’m excited to focus on the skill and see if I can create the kind of work I dream of, but haven’t quite found possible with digital photography. I will continue to post some of my film work in this blog and would love Your feedback, as well as meeting other film photographers with whom I can collaborate and grow as an artist, is welcome.
