How to Dress for a Chilly Family Photography Session

You’re not alone if the thought of planning what to wear for your photo session is already tough, then couple that with colder weather and little kids, and what do you do? Well, besides the fact that I offer my clients my complimentary client styling service (which they LOVE), there are some basics to stick to that make for both beautiful pics and warm bodies, like the Rustberggards below who came to their very chilly fall session in Boulder with a baby and little man. Keep scrolling to read on.

  1. Dress Mom first. This is a duh suggestion. Once you have mom’s (or if you’re reading this, you likely are mom, so your) dress/outfit ready, use that as the base for pulling colors for the others.

  2. Layers! These are fall or winter photos, so you should’ve be in a tank top anyway. I love how layers work in my editing- sweaters and pashminas add texture, allow the light to show through in interesting ways, and help bring a look together.

  3. Include wintery items like cute coats, scarves, and beanies! Again, when it comes to layering, I feel that more is more.

  4. Wear cute boots, like wellies or sheerlings.

  5. Bring a big blanket to wrap around yourselves to stay extra warm and cozy.
