Why Moody Weather Make For Great Photos | Sunshine Lady Photography

Featuring the Batterson Family at New Brighton State Beach

I’ve loved visiting New Brighton State Beach for as long as I can remember. When my children were small, we’d head over and set up for weekend afternoons near the washed up logs. You can see all the way to Pleasure Point (and can also paddleboard there, though I’m a little freaked out about it because of the great white sharks in the water), and the sun peeking through the eucalyptus tress in the evenings creates such beautiful light.

On this particular evening, I started out one session with this light and by the time the Battersons’ session time began, a large veil of fog moved in and coated the beach with a moody gray. Worried about the lack of beautiful light, but able to photograph the family from all angles because of the lack of bright light, I just kept us moving and embraced the moodiness. To say I was a bit shocked by just HOW beautiful the images turned out would not be an understatement. I LOVE the contradiction of the gray clouds with the joyful and soulful family and couldn’t ask for a better backdrop to showcase their sweet bond with each other.

There's a certain moody charm to gray light. It can transform an everyday scene into a masterpiece straight out of a novel or a film. Who needs sunshine when you can create magic with the gray?

Here’s why this light works:

  • Gray light can be your secret ingredient to infuse mystery, drama, or a vintage charm in your photographs. It's like adding a pinch of spice or a dash of sauce to your recipe.

  • Say goodbye to unflattering shadows with gray light which reveals textures and details effortlessly. It's like putting on a pair of glasses and seeing your subjects - be it landscapes, buildings, or lovely faces - in clear, crisp detail.

  • Love subtle shades and tones over screaming colors? Gray light is your best bet! It lends your photos a soothing, painting-like quality that's bound to make anyone pause and admire.

  • Isn't it frustrating when parts of your image are overexposed and others are underexposed? Enter gray light. It's like a brilliant symphony conductor, ensuring all tones get their time in the spotlight, resulting in a harmonious image.

  • Gray light is like that one dress that looks fabulous no matter the occasion. It can transform any subject, lending an exquisite, classy touch to your images.

Remember that the effectiveness of moody gray light in photography is subjective, and personal preferences play a significant role. If you’re open to experimenting with different lighting conditions, you might just get images more beautiful and unique than you imagined when you booked with me.
