Have you ever questioned why you think something has to be a certain way? For instance, why do so many of us think that there are only windows when we should book photo sessions- engagements, maternity, newborn? Who said these are the only times worthy of being photographed? I’m here to say that really ANY TIME is great. But specifically with babies- yes, I do LOVE a newborn session and encourage new parents to document these precious first moments, BUT what if you had a really traumatic birth and need time to heal? What if you’re dealing with postpartum depression and can’t muster the energy to smile and look good for the camera? What if your baby has to spend months in the NICU? What if you just need a MINUTE to breath and figure out WTF is going on? I get it.

Jenny contacted me last fall to join my Boulder Mini Sessions and squeeze in a maternity shoot, but as fate would have it, she ended up going into labor early and had her sweet little baby, who spent considerable time in the NICU. We decided to change gears and photograph sweet Baby Millie at 6 months, when we knew we could get a beautiful backdrop and warm temps (which can be a gamble in Colorado), and everyone could be happy and healthy and enjoy it.

During our session, Baby Millie was giving us major cute vibes, as older babies are able to do, and I loved watching Mom and Dad share a moment together to celebrate their arduous journey to get to this point. We were all together at the perfect time to capture this perfect moment. Being able to be present, content, and filled with gratitude should be all of our goals and I hope to create that experience for my clients.

So, going back to my earlier question about questioning why we think there is a way things are? Screw that. Do what works for you. Every moment is precious.
