Parking Lot Lilac Session

A few weeks ago, as I was waiting into my car in the Fort Collins’s World Market parking lot for my curbside pickup, I caught a whiff of heavenly lilac in the direction of Lowe’s. I realized there were HEDGES of it in their parking lot. So of course I asked one of my favorite clients if she and her sweet baby would be willing to do a shoot that evening in a Lowe’s PARKING LOT. They were game. And Brandi already had a vision for it because she has the BEST style ever.

When we arrived, we hung out in the back of the lot and I had to shoo away confused drivers, but luckily, no one gave us a hard time. Shooting in a parking lot comes with its challenges: cars, light poles, hiding ugly pavement, overcoming awkward layouts, getting comfortable sitting on stone hardscape, etc. Brandi didn’t complain once, and it’s pretty obvious the Evangeline had the time of her life! Thank you so much, Brandi and Eve, for agreeing to suffer the discomfort and bizarreness of hanging out in a Lowe’s parking lot with me. I am pretty obsessed with the outcome!

The lesson I want other photographers (and clients, really!) to take away from this session is that a beautiful picture can happen anywhere if the photographer knows what she’s doing. Luckily in Colorado, we have essentially endless beautiful outdoor locations, but when we want to do something different and get unique images that no one else has hanging on their walls, there are always beautiful spots in the most random locations, such as a Lowe’s parking lot. If you live somewhere that doesn’t necessarily lend itself to dreamy outdoor images, look for little spots in random places that might just be the perfect setting for your own unique shoot.
